Groups, Families, and Individuals Can Explore the Ecosystem of Bugs, Birds, and Critters and Share Their Findings with the World!

Steps: Find wildlife, take picture, share photo.

Join Rancho Los Cerritos for this unique opportunity to experience our national, state, and local historic site through the lens of natural history. The first City Nature Challenge (CNC) began in 2016 as a Los Angeles and San Francisco competition. Today, the CNC has grown into an international event, motivating people worldwide to find, identify, and document wildlife in their cities.

Organized by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global exploration of nature, April 25-28, where cities discover the power of community scientists working together to gather data.

The Rancho has been a partner site for several years and invites private groups and the public to be a part of this community science event. Participants will be assigned a guide to search for wildlife on the Ranchoโ€™s grounds. As bugs, birds, and critters are identified using cell phones and cameras, participants will upload their observations to the iNaturalist app, where data will be collected and confirmed. This year, there will be a special black light event on April 25th from

7:00-9:00 p.m. for adults and children ages eight (8) and up to help search and find wildlife at night! Participation in this event will impact global understanding of natureโ€™s biodiversity across communities worldwide. ย

Register for public, private, or individual tours for each day.
